Josh Buchanan is reporting former Gardner-Webb defensive end Brian Johnston is creating a huge buzz among N.F.L. teams. One A.F.C. franchise has told him they hope he is still around when they select early in the 4th round. Josh informs us that the teams showing the most overt interest in Johnston include Green Bay, Kansas City, Miami, Tennessee, Dallas and the New York Jets.

DD.comment: Johnston was a very good prospect coming out of high school. He originally had committed to play for former N.F.L. head coach John Mackovic at the University of Arizona. But he never made it to Arizona, as Mackovic was fired and new coach Mike Stoops did not want him in 2004, leaving him to scramble to find any college that would take him at the last minute. In retrospect, it was a terrible move by Stoops, who has a 17-29 record in his four seasons at U.A., as Johnston could've been a great edge rusher for the Wildcats.

DD.com E-Mail [Art C.]:

Guys Long-time Rutgers fan checking in. It is true that Pedro Sosa has a knee injury, as it was reported by the school Wednesday. Sosa "tweaked" his knee before the 2007 season but started the first 10 games. He sat out the final home game against Pittsburgh due to a leg injury, and did not play in the East-West Shrine game. I'll be interested to see what happens with him in the draft. If he goes late, say 7th round, someone may have a steal on their hands when he gets healthy.

DD.comment: Art has been one of our favorites here since the early days of DD.com. He's been a Rutgers season ticket holder for several decades and his knowledge of college and pro football is outstanding, so we always learn something when he contacts us. We'd like to thank Art for this E-Mail, as well as all the others he's sent us since 2005.

DD.comment: After registering a blazing 4.32 on a fairly slow track, running back Steve Korte Jr. has to be considered the unsung hero of L.S.U.'s Pro Day. But who is he?

Korte, who was heavily recruited coming out of high school, is the son of former N.F.L. offensive lineman Steve Korte. He sort of got lost in the shuffle in Baton Rogue due to injuries and the Tigers' plethora of talent at running back, so he announced he would transfer to Southern Miss in the summer of 2007. But according to one of our sources, Korte was suspended by both the N.C.A.A. and L.S.U. (due to an academic issue) and has decided to turn to pro, instead of sitting out another season or transfering to a lower level program.

DD.comment: In case anybody really believes Peyton humiliated himself at Pro Day, Gil Brandt of NFL.com reports the 237 pound fullback/tailback ran the 40 in 4.57 and 4.58's seconds, displayed a 35-inch vertical jump and registered a strong 4.24 short shuttle. DD.comment: A lot Forty-Niners' fans are real angry at N.F.L. commissioner Roger Goodell for taking away a 5th round pick in this tampering case involving Pro Bowl caliber linebacker Lance Briggs. We won't wont take sides here, but it could've been much worse -- back in the fall of 2000 N.B.A. czar David Stern docked the Minnesota Timberwolves $3.5 million and 5 First Round Picks in a tampering case involving a very mediocre free agent forward named Joe Smith. Former Louisville linebacker Lamar Myles began his pro day on a strong note today. After weighing in at 230 pounds, he bench pressed 225 pounds a very impressive 33 times and posted one of the top vertical leaps in the nation for a linebacker -- 38". Myles then turned in, roughly, a 4.65 40-yard dash. DD.comment: An N.F.L. source has been telling us for a while now that the Denver Broncos intend to draft a kicker to replace Jason Elam (now in Atlanta) and Taylor Mehlhaff seems to be their primary target. They like the fact that he has kicked in horrible weather and he will get a big effect from the new altitude on his kickoffs. He is a left footer so getting him signed early and working with the new holder, who is used to Elam's right footed style, is a must.

****

DD.com Feature: Since 2004 we've probably linked over 25,000 articles in our blog. And, for the most part, we've noticed a lot of football fans and writers tend to wildly overinflate the 40 yard dash times of the average N.F.L. prospect and veteran. DD.comment: Johnson's best electronically timed 40 yard dash at the Combine was a 4.55 and O'Connell's best time in Indy was 4.61 seconds (officially 6' 5" and 225 pounds), so we are dealing with a pair of tremendous athletes. DD.comment: According to one of our sources, who spoke with several insiders after the Combine, Larry Grant surprised many scouts with his overall athletic ability and might have, ultimately, secured a spot in the middle rounds of the draft....N.F.L. teams already liked his special teams production at Ohio State, but his performance in the agility drills (3-cone and 20-yd shuttle) and 4.71 40 at 235 pounds in Indianapolis really forced many teams to take a closer look at him.

Size: 6' 5", 256 pounds

40 Yard Dash: 4.54

Vertical Leap: 33.5"

Bench Press: 32

3 cone: 6.84

Shuttle: 4.19

60 yd Shuttle: 11.28

Broad Jump: 9.9

DD.comment: Scott may be a bit of a project, but he's a good athlete, who may even project as a outside linebacker (3-4 base) at the next level. He should, also, be able to help on special teams early in his career. Scott reminds us a bit of former S.M.U. star Justin Rogers, who was drafted by the Patriots in 2007.

Former Arkansas star Matt Jones appears to be on the bubble with Jacksonville.

DD.comment: Best thing for both parties involved would be for Jones to be traded or released. Matt still has potential in the right system -- evidenced by his 8 catch, 138 yard effort in the 2007 season finale against Houston. Problem is, the coaching staff seems to dislike him on a personal level and David Garrard doesn't look for him much....One wild theory that we've heard is that Garrard isn't that fond of Jones because Matt was real close friends with and a huge supporter of former Jags quarterback Byron Leftwich. And if media reports are accurate, Leftwich and Garrard liked each other as much as Jerry and Newman did back on the 1990's sitcom Seinfeld.

We recently made major changes to our positional rankings for the Top Prospects in college football and, once again, we divided them into 3 categories:

Top 10 Prospects: These are the top 10 prospects at each position, plus players we feel are "on the cusp" of cracking the top 10.

Top Small Schoolers: We listed about 150 small school prospects, sorted by position, that have the talent to catch the eye of N.F.L. scouts.

Big School Surprise: These are very draftable prospects from FBS schools (1-A) that could surprise people and climb the draft charts as the draft process moves forward.

DD.com E-Mail [bigcanefan]:

I was at Florida Atlantic University Pro Day on Thursday and Terrell Walden ran a 4.32 and a 4.37 into wind with temps in the 50's. These times were from the scouts and they were extremely impressed given the conditions. He's a former University of Miami player, who went to Lane College last year. Where can I find more info on him? Thanks, love the site.

DD.com Reply: Thanks for the input and nice words. We've known about Walden for a while because he was a 4-star recruit that once created a "buzz" in Coral Gables due to his track star speed. But he rarely played for the Canes and eventually left, so we lost track of him around 2006? Just an educated guess on our part, but we think he's a bit of a long shot to make it, based on the fact that none of our inside contacts know much about him and due to the fact that he couldn't establish himself on the field at Miami or Lane College.
