DD.com E-Mail (Scout):

Check on University of Connecticut guard Donald Thomas (6035 303), who has a verified 4.9 40 and is getting better each week. He is, at this point, a 6th or 7th round pick. See South Florida tape for more on Thomas...Also, University of Delaware quarterback Joe Flacco is getting rave reviews by pro scouts, who project the former Pitt Panther in the 2nd round range. See New Hampshire and Navy tapes for more on Flacco.

DD.comments: We know who the E-Mailer "Scout" is and he is a true draft insider. We thank him for all the input and help he's given us over the last few years. He does just an amazing job breaking down the offensive line prospects, in particular....Also, Scout has informed us that Youngstown State linebacker James Terry is being talked about as a potential middle round prospect (5th to 6th round) by some N.F.L. scouts.

Rising University of Missouri senior safety Pig Brown suffered a season-ending Achilles’ tendon injury on Saturday.

****

We got to watch Arkansas State quite a bit last weekend and were impressed with several of their players. Senior safety Tyrell Johnson, who reminds us a bit of Arizona State safety Josh Barrett, is having a huge season and displays the type of skills you expect to see in an N.F.L. prospect. He is a player that will very likely get drafted, as long as he checks out in workouts.

Meanwhile, fellow Indians' defender Koby McKinnon caught us by surprise a bit. We knew he's been one of the better of defenders in the Sun Belt the last few seasons (stats wise), but we were pleasently surprised by his combination of strength, speed and quickness at linebacker. He's a very good college player, that much is for sure. Question is, does he project in the N.F.L. as a linebacker or safety? At 211 pounds, he's too light to play linebacker, so he'll either have to bulk up (he has the frame to do it) or show he has the speed to play safety. Either way, keep an eye on him as a 7th round/ free agent type that can impress once he's signed.

Post Script: While checking out the bio's of the players we watched over the weekend, we noticed that 6' 2", 205 pound sophomore safety Evan Van Dolah reportedly runs in the 4.3's. He's already a decent football player, so with more experience he could be a solid N.F.L. prospect (i.e. Brannon Condren), if he runs anywhere close to that reported time. Looking at Van Dolah's bio, it's almost shocking to think he did not sign with an SEC team as a "athlete".

Look at some heavily recruited quarterbacks that have been average and some lightly recruited quarterbacks that have become stars...Booms and Bust at Quarterback.

DD.comment: While we don't think either of Florida State's quarterbacks are elite prospects (that's reflected in Our Junior QB rankings), we will defend them a bit, as F.S.U. has had no running game since 2005 (none!), a string of terrible offensive lines (some teams in the MAC have had better lines) and wide receivers that are widely praised by the mainstream media, but are inconsistent, at best.

Closer look at Connecticut's super freshman linebacker Scott Lutrus.

DD.comment: We can't imagine that there too many freshman linebackers in the nation that have played better than Lutrus, who was small school sensation as a running back at Brookfield high. Don't be surprised if this player is compared to current Minnesota Vikings' linebacker Chad Greenway, if he continues to progress. At the very least, he should be a force in the Big East the next few seasons.

Dan Pompei: Scouting the Top 10 College Wide Receivers.

DD.comment: Kansas State's Jordy Nelson belongs on any Top 10 wide receivers' list, at this point (we rank him #5 among the seniors and may move him up soon). Nelson was already one of the leading receivers in the nation heading into today's action, and he continued to impress snagging 12 receptions for 174 yards and 3 touchdowns at Oklahoma State. Nelson has excelled against some of the top cornerbacks in the nation this season (i.e. Aqib Talib & Terrence Wheatley) and, as the article we linked in yesterday's blog noted, there is no valid reason to believe he's not fast.

With the upstart University of South Florida Bulls currently vying for a national title, we thought we'd list all the current FBS football programs that made the "leap" from 1-AA to 1-A since 1992:

Arkansas State Indians – Sun Belt (1992)

Nevada-Reno Wolfpack – Western Athletic Conference (1992)

Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks – Sun Belt (1994)

North Texas Mean Green – Sun Belt (1995)

Central Florida Golden Knights –Conference USA (1996)

Boise State Broncos – Western Athletic Conference (1996)

Alabama-Birmingham Blazers – Conference USA (1996)

Idaho Vandals – Western Athletic Conference (1997)

Marshall Thundering Herd – Confrence USA (1997)

Buffalo Bulls – Mid American Conference (1999)

Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders – Sun Belt (1999)

South Florida Bulls – Big East (2001)

Troy State Trojans – Sun Belt (2001)

Georgia Tech star Phillip Wheeler has developed into one of the nation's top linebackers.

DD.comment: By the way, while Wheeler has shifted to middle linebacker this season, we are projecting him as an outside linebacker at the next level, mostly due to the fact that he's just not that big (listed at 6' 2", 230, but seems smaller) and he might be better served playing on the outside.

Also, fellow Jackets' linebackers Gary Guyton and Shane Bowen have impressed us this season. Guyton, a senior, possesses a solid mix of size and seems to have a nose for the football. He could project as a solid Day 2 selection if he posts strong workout numbers in pre-draft workouts. Bowen, a sophomore, conjures up images of former Tech superstar Keith Brooking when he's on. We're not saying he'll be in Brooking's lofty class, but he's got a similar body type and every time we watch the Jackets he impresses us with his athletic ability and non-stop motor.

DD.comment: One inside source told us an almost sure fire day one N.F.L. prospect told him U.T.E.P.'s Oniel Cousins was, perhaps, the most nimble "big man" he's ever faced. The source also told us Cousins, who was born in Jamaica, is a former soccer goalie that has run a 4.9 40 for N.F.L. scouts. So he's clearly an athletic player, who we'll keep a close eye on going forward.

****

Mel Kiper Jr. rates Cal-Berkeley's Nate Longshore as the top quarterback prospect in the junior class.

DD.comment: We've had Longshore rated as the #1 quarterback in his class since the early part of his sophomore year. Rudy Carpenter of Arizona State is another junior we know scouts like a lot, despite the fact that he's not real tall.

Arizona State's guitar man, Mike Pollack, keeps the Sun Devils' strong offensive line in sync.

****

Highly regarded Rutgers University redshirt Joe Martinek could be the next Brian Leonard.

DD.comment: Glad to see Schiano is giving this kid a shot at running back, which is his natural position. Word out of Jersey last year was Martinek would likely be bulked up and moved to linebacker, which made zero sense to us, considering how good of a high school tailback he was. Also, at about 5' 11" and 200 pounds, Martinek should be better suited to play running back at the next level (unless he has an unexpected growth spurt).

We would rate him a bit higher, but up until the Florida game he wasn't getting to carry the ball a lot for the Tigers. It will be fascinating to see if Hester gets a Senior Bowl invite. DD.comment: We post, perhaps, 5,000 news stories each year in the blog, so it's hard to remember all the info we take in. But we are quite sure we posted back in January that Brinkley got a Day 2 projection (4th or 5th round?) from the N.F.L.'s Draft Advisory Panel, partly due to questions about his foot speed, when he flirted with leaving U.S.C. early. Running back Jacob Hester and fast rising N.F.L. prospect Craig Steltz led the way in L.S.U.'s huge win over Florida.

DD.comment: Steltz was one of the most Highly Regarded Safety Prospects in the nation when he left high school, largely based on this physical skills (speed, strength, athletic ability, ect). As bad as Notre Dame's season is going, one major bright spot has been the play of senior defensive tackle Trevor Laws.

It's not too often that you can say a "big fellow" plays just as hard when his team is losing 35-7, as he does when his team is tied 7-7 in the first quarter. In other words, he's the type of player a team like the Cincinnati Bengals could use. With a fancy showing in post season workouts, Laws could easily move into the top 3 rounds.

Respected NFL.com analyst Gil Brandt says Iowa State wide receiver Todd Blythe could go fairly high in the draft.

DD.comment: Nice to see Brandt back Blythe, because we thought we were the only folks in cyberspace still backing this kid -- we rank him the 10th best senior wide receiver, while most have him no where near their top 20 senior wide receiver's. Blythe was almost unstoppable his first two seasons at I.S.U., but he's been adversely affected by injuries and an inconsistent supporting cast on offense since that point.
